MENTOR Celebrates Michael D. Smith’s Nomination as the CEO of AmeriCorps
December 9, 2021
December 9, 2021 – MENTOR joins community-based organizations across the country in celebrating the Senate’s bipartisan approval of Michael D. Smith’s nomination to serve as the chief executive officer of AmeriCorps, the federal agency responsible for supporting communities through national service and volunteering.

Through our work with the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, the Obama Foundation, and previously during the President Obama Administration, MENTOR has had the privilege to work collaboratively with Mr. Smith on the needs of the country’s youth, fostering the value of surrounding young people with supportive relationships, and working to expand opportunities for youth in every community and eliminate structural barriers.
Now, more than ever, our nation’s young people need people-powered support to aid in our collective recovery from the disruption, disconnection, and related trauma due to COVID-19. Personalized connection and stability delivered through the service of AmeriCorps members has always been central in strengthening our civic fabric and powering the mentoring movement. Relationships are central to allowing young people to increase sense of self, possibility, and navigate to their aspirations. We can expect Mr. Smith to lead AmeriCorps with dedication and determination focused on supporting the capacity of community-based programs, centering the power of relationships, and elevating the importance of national service and volunteerism nationwide.
