Building Your Capacity for Match Support

An introductory training for youth-mentoring programs developing or strengthening foundational program match-support practices

Why focus on match support?

In youth mentoring, the quality of the mentor-mentee relationship can be a determining factor in the success of the experience. Program staff members can help mentors and mentees build positive relationships through intentional monitoring and support activities, or match support. This module offers strategies for implementing four essential components of match support:

  • Facilitating relationship development between mentors and mentees during the match
  • Establishing routine communication with mentors, mentees, and guardians
  • Providing custom training and support to mentors
  • Celebrating and recognizing matches

What to expect:

  • Plan to spend 15 to 20 minutes engaging with each chapter. Many chapters will prompt you to review additional resources.
  • Each chapter includes companion handouts (such as templates and document samples) you can review and use offline. You can download the full companion handout packet here.
