MENTOR JOINS THE NATION AND WORLD IN REFLECTING ON THE LOSS AND ENDURING IMPACT OF GENERAL COLIN POWELL
October 19, 2021

October 19, 2021 – On behalf of MENTOR and the mentoring movement, we join the nation and the world in mourning the loss of General Colin Powell, a pioneering statesman and leader whose legacy of impact is multi-faceted. We specifically reflect on his visionary leadership in the early stages of the mentoring movement and as an early board member. In reflecting on his own journey and the future peace, prosperity, and possibility of America, General Powell turned his platform, skills, unifying and galvanizing leadership toward creating optimal conditions for the healthy development of all our country’s youth.
He convened the Summit on America’s Future and was the Founding Chairman of America’s Promise Alliance, a dynamic coalition focused on the well-being of our young people. MENTOR is proud to be one of the founding partners of this nationwide movement to improve the lives and futures of America’s youth, and we are proud to work side-by-side decades later.
General Powell and his partner in life and America’s Promise, Alma, rallied diverse actors across the nation to ensure healthy building blocks for our young people, making them our urgent national priority at every level of government, business, and ultimately in our communities. The seeds he planted on behalf of our youth are deeply rooted and his legacy of impact calls on us to elevate the prioritization of all our young people.
Relationships support the hopes and dreams of our nation’s youth. As we come together to honor this giant of a man whose legacy is so expansive, we are deeply inspired by his steadfast work to ensure young people have the supports they need to strive and thrive. His legacy rests in the many investments in and champions of young people that were created as a result of his leadership. So many are fortunate as we are to call him a mentor.
